About EZRRC

The Texas Railroad Commission publishes around 90 oil and gas datasets to the public, at no charge. EZRRC republishes them in formats a normal person can open, with the join keys and code lookups written down.

Where the data comes from

All of it comes from the Railroad Commission of Texas. It is public-domain Texas government information, and every dataset page here links back to the RRC page it came from, along with the record-layout manual that describes it. We add nothing to the records themselves.

What we actually do

  • Transcode. 18 of these datasets are EBCDIC, IBM's cp037 encoding. They are converted to UTF-8 before anything else happens.
  • Apply the layout. 38 are fixed-width ASCII with no headers. The byte positions come out of 36 RRC record-layout manuals and become real, named columns.
  • Write down the joins. 57 relationships between datasets are recorded with the exact columns on each side, so you can see that permits meet wellbores on the API number without reverse engineering it.
  • Normalise the codes. 456 coded values across 29 lookup sets are stored as tables. You can read the labels on screen, or have them joined into your export.
  • Keep the original. The pristine RRC file is always offered alongside the converted formats, byte for byte, so any conversion we make can be audited against it.

What we do not do

We do not correct, interpolate or reinterpret the records. If a value looks wrong here, it is because it is that way in the RRC release. For any legal or regulatory purpose, verify against the official RRC publication.

How it is paid for

The data is free and stays free. The site carries advertising, which is what pays for the storage and the conversion. There is no paywall, no per-download charge, and no reselling of anyone's information.
